The Big Buddha is one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Pattaya. It is located in the center of Wat Phra Yai Temple, the most important Buddhist temple in Pattaya, on the top of Pratamak Hill also called Big Buddha Hill, South of Pattaya city. The golden colored Big Buddha is 18-meter-tall which can be seen from far way. It is popular with locals and tourists as well and it is the largest Buddha image in the Chonburi province of Thailand.
Are you planning a trip to Pattaya
Wat Phra Yai was built in the 1940s, and at that time, Pattaya was just a small fishing village. The Big Buddha image was constructed in 1977. Since the enormous statue was built, it became the main attraction in Pattaya quickly. Monks from all over Thailand would come here to offer prayers. Besides the Big Buddha, there are seven smaller Buddha images on the temple ground and a pavilion as well. Locals come to the temple to pray for health, wealth and happiness frequently.
When you arrive at the bottom of the Big Buddha Hill, you will be greeted by staircase flanked by two golden snakes twinkled on the two handrails leading up to the Big Buddha at the top of the hill. These snakes are the guarders of the entrance to the temple. After walking up the long staircase to the top you will enter a grand patio area where the giant golden Buddha seated and the seven different Buddha statues surrounded. Walk to the edge then you will get best view of Pattaya and the ocean below.
We do recommend you get Big Buddha temple early in the morning as it will be quiet and less crowded than later in the day when the tourist groups come. This is the best time to visit if you like to take photos or video.
Although Big Buddha temple is very busy every day, the burning incense sticks and the Buddhist chants create a relaxed and reflective atmosphere.
When you go down the hill, you can stop at the half way where there is a small Chinese temple which worth a quick look around. Inside you will find a number of figures from Chinese history and folklore are displayed. There is a large metal bell in the temple built imitated the one in the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. A statue of the great Chinese philosopher Confucius who lived about 2,500 years is also can be found. You will also find a garden and tranquil pond which is a nice place to have a rest for a while.
