Day 6 - Kanazawa Culture Day Tour | Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen Garden, Higashi Chaya District

Shirakawa-go is surrounded by steep mountains, 96% of the village is forest, and only 0.4% of farmland is a typical mountain village. In the village, there are Hakusan National Park, Tiansheng Prefectural Natural Park, etc.and there are many natures that have been preserved since ancient times. In the Hida area, villages fall into steep areas with mountain folds, while Shokawa flows through gaps in steep slopes like stitched folds, forming villages in the watershed.

Kanazawa Castle, once the seat of the powerful Maeda Clan, has endured multiple fires over the centuries, with only the Ishikawa-mon Gate (built in 1788) and two storehouses surviving the last major fire in 1881. After Kanazawa University relocated from the site in the 1990s, efforts began to restore the castle’s historic structures, many of which are now beautifully rebuilt, making it a fascinating place to explore alongside neighboring Kenrokuen Garden.

Japan’s most celebrated landscape garden, Kenrokuen in Kanazawa is also known as one of its Three Great Gardens (alongside Mito's Kairakuen and Okayama's Korakuen). The spacious grounds used to be the outer garden of Kanazawa Castle and were created over a period of nearly two centuries. Opened to the public in 1871, Kenrokuen features a variety of flowering trees which transform during each season.

The picturesque Higashi Chaya district is designated as a Nationally Important Cultural Asset. Its historic buildings give you a glimpse of what this district looked like during ancient Japan.
